Common Typing Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Six habits account for most typing plateaus: looking at the keyboard, inconsistent finger use, tension in the hands and shoulders, racing past your own accuracy, practising only easy text, and practising irregularly. None of them require starting over to fix. Each one below comes with the specific correction, and one of the six runs contrary to what traditional typing courses insist on.

1. Looking at the keyboard

This is the one that costs the most, and the reason is mechanical, not a question of discipline. Your eyes can only be in one place, so every glance down is a moment you are not reading ahead in the text.

Reading ahead is where typing speed comes from. Timothy Salthouse's 1984 research on skilled typists found they queue upcoming keystrokes well before the fingers need them, and the 2016 Aalto University study independently identified active preparation of upcoming keystrokes as one of three predictors of typing performance. Neither is possible while your attention is on your hands, which is why practice alone will not lift you past this.

The fix: keep your eyes on the screen even when it makes you slower, and expect one to two uncomfortable weeks. Typing text you want to read makes that period much easier to sit through than drills do. 2. Using too few fingers, or rather using them inconsistently

The standard advice is that anything short of ten fingers is wrong. The evidence is more forgiving. The Aalto study tracked 30 typists with motion capture and found that self-taught typists using fewer than ten fingers reached performance comparable to formally trained touch typists.

What did predict speed was an unambiguous mapping, where a given letter is always pressed by the same finger, along with minimal overall hand motion. The real mistake is not finger count. It is hitting E with whichever finger happens to be nearest, so no stable habit ever forms and your hands drift around the keyboard.

The fix: settle on one finger per key and keep it, returning to a consistent resting position after every reach. The home row gives you that for free, which is its real value. If you already type with six fingers consistently, tightening the consistency will do more for you than a rebuild.

3. Tension in the hands and shoulders

Tension builds without announcing itself. Raised shoulders, wrists bent upward, fingers held rigid above the keys and a hard strike on every keypress all add effort to a movement that should be light. It costs you speed, because tense fingers travel further and recover more slowly, and it shortens sessions through fatigue.

Session length matters more than it first appears, since improvement is driven by accumulated volume. Anything that makes you stop after ten minutes is limiting the thing that produces progress.

The fix: forearms level with the desk, wrists straight rather than angled up, shoulders down, and a light touch. Keys need far less force than most people apply. If your hands ache after twenty minutes, the problem is usually posture, not how long you sat there.

4. Chasing speed at the cost of accuracy

The assumption behind this one is that speed and accuracy trade against each other, so errors are the price of going faster. The data does not support the trade-off. Aggregate figures from 30,000+ users on TypeLit.io show accuracy rising with speed at nearly every step, from 92.3 percent in the 10 to 20 WPM band to 95.9 percent at 100 to 120 WPM. The fastest typists are also the most accurate.

Errors are expensive in a way the scoreboard hides. Every mistake costs a backspace, a retype and a break in your reading, and all of that is already inside your WPM. In the 2018 Aalto study, participants averaged 2.29 corrections per sentence, around 6.3 percent of their input spent undoing work.

The fix: type slightly below your maximum, at the pace where you are mostly correct. Racing rehearses error recovery; a comfortable pace rehearses the technique you want to keep. There is more on this in our piece on typing accuracy.

5. Practising only easy text

Common-word drills feel productive and are comfortable, which is the problem. They draw from frequency lists, so you spend the session on letter combinations your hands already know, and improvement stalls because there is nothing in the material you have not already mastered. Numbers, capitals, semicolons, apostrophes and quotation marks, the keys with the longest reaches, are exactly what such drills leave out.

6. Practising inconsistently

A long session once a fortnight loses to fifteen minutes a day, and the gap is wider than most people assume. Research by Pinet and colleagues in 2022, across 1,301 typists, found daily typing time to be a strong predictor of typing skill while deliberate practice showed no measurable effect at all. Ordinary everyday volume is what builds the skill.

Speed also climbs within a single sitting, from 50.7 WPM on the first page to 59.0 WPM by the fiftieth, so stopping after five minutes means never reaching the productive part of a session.

The fix: make it short, daily and attached to something you want to finish. A book supplies the motivation that a drill counter cannot, because you want to know what happens next. Something with momentum like The Time Machine or Treasure Island will keep you in the chair longer than any timer.

Where to start

Fixing all six at once is not realistic. If you look at the keyboard, start there, because it constrains everything else.
