“Who told thee that?” cried Ahab; then pausing, “Aye, Starbuck; aye, my hearties all round; it was Moby Dick that dismasted me; Moby Dick that brought me to this dead stump I stand on now. Aye, aye,” he shouted with a terrific, loud, animal sob, like that of a heart-stricken moose; “Aye, aye! it was that accursed white whale that razed me; made a poor pegging lubber of me for ever and a day!” Then tossing both arms, with measureless imprecations he shouted out: “Aye, aye! and I’ll chase him round Good Hope, and round the Horn, and round the Norway Maelstrom, and round perdition’s flames before I give him up. And this is what ye have shipped for, men! to chase that white whale on both sides of land, and over all sides of earth, till he spouts black blood and rolls fin out. What say ye, men, will ye splice hands on it, now? I think ye do look brave.”

1-minute typing test FAQ

What is the TypeLit typing test?

The TypeLit typing test is a free online 1-minute (60-second) typing test. You type a paragraph from a classic novel, and at the end you see your words per minute (WPM) and accuracy. There is nothing to install and you do not need an account.

How is the TypeLit typing test different from other typing tests?

Many typing speed tests use random strings of common words. The TypeLit typing test uses real paragraphs from classic books, with capital letters, punctuation and longer words, so your score reflects how you type everyday text. To keep improving, you can type the whole book the paragraph came from.

How long is the typing test?

The TypeLit typing test lasts one minute by default. Click the timer to pick 15 seconds, 30 seconds or 2 minutes, or pick Unlimited or No timer to take as long as you need. The clock starts on your first keystroke. Each test is one paragraph, so if you finish it early, the test stops and scores you on the time you took.

How is WPM calculated?

On TypeLit, every five characters you type count as one word, including spaces and punctuation, and the word count is divided by the minutes taken. This is the standard rule most typing tests use, so you can compare your score with other sites.

How is typing accuracy measured?

Typing accuracy is the percentage of your keystrokes that match the text. On TypeLit, capital letters and punctuation count, and a mistake still counts even if you backspace to fix it.

What is a good score on a 1-minute typing test?

A good score on a 1-minute typing test is anything over 60 WPM. According to TypeLit's State of Typing report, which covers more than 30,000 users, that puts you ahead of about 70% of them. The average is 51.8 WPM and the median is 49.7 WPM. 7.3% type faster than 80 WPM and 1.3% faster than 100 WPM. For accuracy, the average is 94%, so 95% or better is a good result.

Where do the typing test paragraphs come from?

The paragraphs are well-known passages from public domain classics in the TypeLit library, such as Pride and Prejudice, Frankenstein and Moby-Dick. Endings are left out so nothing gets spoiled, and every paragraph has been checked to make sure it is fine for kids.

Can I take the typing test on a phone?

Yes. The TypeLit typing test works on phones and tablets. Tap the paragraph to open your keyboard and start typing.
